Happy New Year...I'm staying in tonight and avoiding the crowds and craziness, although I am considering going to Motherfucker later, after 4 at least.
Really I had my celebration earlier in the week when I saw Patti Smith at the Bowery Ballroom--fantastic show, and it's amazing that she sounds EXACTLY the same as the show I was listening to earlier from 1979 at CBGB's--beautiful stuff.
Was pleased to have run into some Dylan people at the show, most notably the guy I sat next to during the show with Tom Petty at Holmdel August 9, 2003. We reflected on how great that show was, and our seats--third row left, Bob-side, great view. He bailed out of the NYC-area tour stops on a high note after Hammerstein 2, which was not necessarily a bad move. I hung in through Bushkill and the blackout show--each had their pros and cons, but overall, seeing Bob six times in 11 days this year was an amazing experience to say the least.
I saw another woman at Patti Smith wearing a Dylan sweatshirt and said, "you like Bob?" in line at the bar. She replied, "I LOVE Bob!" I said "me too" of course and she hugged me--it was nice.
Next show on my radar is Elvis Costello--February 26, 2004 at the Beacon Theater. It still hasn't hit me that I totally scored the best ticket I've ever gotten from the evil Ticketmaster--2nd Row Center--and my streak of not having to buy from a broker or eBay remains unbroken. I'm getting to be a pro at the on-line sales and have had such coups as the aforementioned Holmdel show last summer, tenth row for Tori Amos also at Holmdel, fifth row for both nights of Elvis Costello at Town Hall in September, a decent last-minute seat for Springsteen's last night at Shea Stadium (the one where Bob made a surprise appearance for Highway 61!), third row for Simon and Garfunkel...I'm spoiled, but once you're there there's no going back.
I hope something else comes up between now and then--I'm saving up for Producers tickets now that Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane are back, but Bob hasn't announced the next tour yet so until then I'll have to be patient.

Photo downloaded from the Dylan Pool Photo Gallery
Excerpt from "Bob Dylan: The Classic Interviews 1965-1966" with Martin Bronstein, 2/20/1966, Montreal
MB: "When did you realize this success was happening, to you...? This thing that's made you world famous..."
BD: "Not too long ago really. I didn't really realize it before four or five or six months ago that I couldn't go into a restaurant. I didn't know it was that bad, you know...I mean, I could never think of that...that does tricks with your head, you know, when you can't go someplace where everybody else can go, and be left alone. You can't go down to an all-night drugstore or something, and just sit there all night. My whole life I'm used to staying out all night in public places..."

THANK BOB, THE N.E.T. ISN'T OVER!
Bob Dylan (finally!) announced a Winter/Spring 2003 tour including several dates around the midwest with more to come I'm sure. The 3 St. Louis shows look great--the venue capacity is only 2300, but St. Louis is an expensive plane ticket and i have no friends to stay with, so I'm looking ahead to Chicago. GA ticket pre-sales start tomorrow...
My current BT downloads at STG:
